Mystery of the Heart

The man in black courted the woman in white
and everyone around them whispered fears
to one another about what fate awaited her.
His hands almost assuredly,
as the only aspect of consensus to emerge
from this gossip, had or would soon have
some awful stain upon them.
His guilt was only latent.

However,
as if to prove no earthbound angels existed,
it was she who broke his heart,
not in rejecting him but in refusing him
the fidelity he had given her
without hesitation.

To the surprise of many,
he also forgave her without pause
or consideration, totally,
and without resentment,
never offering a justification.

Love entices us just as it gives us cause
to fear. We will dive in headfirst
anyway.
