The Wrong Audience

The above image is from a conversation thread on Twitter that I participated in about self-published authors and how they should get their work out there to an audience. I don’t advertise my own books (though I do have a page attached to this blog which lists them and where they can be purchased). I prefer to let my blogging speak for me as an author and to whet interest that way. Besides, we’re so saturated with ads and paid content as it is, I prefer not to add to it.

Is this a good approach? I’ve asked myself that question before, and now I’ve had it posited to me that the “right audience” will want me to sell to them. I’m skeptical about this, but is it true in anyone’s experience? Feel free to comment on this subject. I’d love to know.
